Australian & International Graduates Working in Australia

Approved Medical Deputising Service Program (AMDS)

Placement on the AMDS program may be filled by medical practitioners who may provide after-hours deputising home visit services. It allows doctors who are permanent residents or citizens of Australia, who have either completed their internship on or after November 1996 and whose service cannot attract Medicare benefits because of subsection 19AA (1) B of the Act, or, are overseas trained medical practitioners who are subject to both section 19AA and 19AB of the Act.

The Medical Practitioner must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold Medical Registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Have a minimum of two years post-graduate experience, including experience in paediatrics and accident & emergency medicine
  • If possible, also have two years post-graduate experience in general practice
  • And satisfy the service provider that they hold an appropriate level of medical indemnity insurance with an Australian defence organisation

Those doctors that are not vocationally recognised are eligible to attract VR Medicare rebates for patient consultations performed whilst working towards RACGP Fellowship.
